I would love to tell your story
Why: To steal a sentiment from the inimitable Mary Oliver:
you have a lifetime, but only for a while.
Literally, YOLO. Every moment you spend hemming over whether to have your kids & family professionally photographed is a moment you don’t get back. My life’s work is offering the only cure for chronophobia (the fear of time passing): freezing the clock artfully and meaningfully. No one ever regrets having taken family photos. The rue usually comes from having waited too long or never having done it at all.
Research shows that children do not start to form concrete memories until they’re 7-years-old. Memories before that age are merely combinations of what they’ve been told and what records they’ve seen of early childhood. That you photograph them and have yourselves photographed with them is paramount to what they’ll remember about themselves and their families.
Who: I call myself a “childhood” photographer, but since parents are an inestimably huge part of childhood, your presence is celebrated in the memories we’ll make together for your kids. The whole nuclear family is invited, doggos and cattos included.
Where: The answer may surprise you: I don’t really care. I photograph people, not locations, so if there is a place that is special to you, let’s go there! Or if you want to lean on my decade of location scouting, I’ve got suggestions and preferences. I typically will not go to high-traffic and/or tourist-laden spots, unless you have a pretty compelling reason for why you want photos somewhere that rhymes with Ted Talks.
That said, when we do our session planning phone call, I am going to pitch that we use your home as our location. There is nothing more personal than home, where so many memories are formed for littles. Plus, most children under the age of 6 are most themselves (and most easily contained) in familiar surroundings. Newborn sessions are always photographed at home. A magazine-worthy house is not at all a requirement. You will be floored at what we can create in what some may think are cramped and cluttered spaces .
When: Fall is my high-season, so book early to get a date September through December. Otherwise, I typically book about a month in advance.
